What is Transferrin?
Transferrin is the main protein in your blood that binds to iron and carries it throughout your body. It delivers iron to tissues that need it, including the bone marrow (for making red blood cells), the liver (for storage), and muscles.
Each transferrin molecule can bind up to two iron atoms. Normally, about 20-30% of transferrin's binding sites are occupied by iron. This percentage is called transferrin saturation and provides additional information about your iron status.
Your body adjusts transferrin production based on iron availability. When iron stores are low, the liver makes more transferrin to capture and transport as much iron as possible. When iron is abundant, transferrin production decreases.
Where Does Transferrin Come From?
Transferrin is produced primarily by hepatocytes in the liver. Production is regulated by iron availability, with increased synthesis when iron stores are low.
