What is Thyroglobulin (Tg)?
Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a large protein produced exclusively by the follicular cells of your thyroid gland. It serves as the building block for thyroid hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine).
In healthy individuals with an intact thyroid, small amounts of thyroglobulin leak into the bloodstream. The level roughly corresponds to the size of the thyroid gland, with approximately 0.5-1.0 ng/mL per gram of thyroid tissue.
Thyroglobulin is primarily used as a tumor marker for monitoring differentiated thyroid cancer (papillary and follicular types) after treatment. Because only thyroid cells produce this protein, it can indicate whether thyroid tissue remains in the body after surgery and radioactive iodine treatment.
Where Does Thyroglobulin (Tg) Come From?
Thyroglobulin is produced exclusively by the follicular cells of the thyroid gland. It is synthesized and stored within the thyroid follicles, where it serves as the scaffold for thyroid hormone production.
