What is Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA)?

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by cells in the prostate gland. It helps liquefy semen and is normally present in small amounts in the blood.

PSA exists in the blood in multiple forms: bound to proteins (mainly alpha-1-antichymotrypsin) and unbound (free PSA). Most commercial tests measure total PSA, which includes both forms.

PSA is organ-specific rather than cancer-specific, meaning levels can rise due to benign conditions as well as prostate cancer. This marker is only relevant in men and individuals with a prostate gland.

Where Does Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Come From?

PSA is produced by epithelial cells of the prostate gland. Both normal and abnormal prostate tissue (including benign hyperplasia and cancer) produce PSA, though the amount released into the bloodstream varies with prostate size and tissue disruption.
