What is Prolactin (PRL)?

Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain. It is best known for stimulating breast development during pregnancy and milk production after childbirth.

In men and non-pregnant women, prolactin levels are normally low. High levels during pregnancy and breastfeeding are expected, but elevated prolactin in other situations (hyperprolactinemia) can indicate an underlying issue.

Beyond lactation, prolactin influences over 300 functions in the body, including reproductive health, immune regulation, and metabolism.

Where Does Prolactin (PRL) Come From?

Prolactin is primarily produced by lactotroph cells in the anterior pituitary gland. Smaller amounts are also made in the brain, uterus, breast tissue, immune cells, and adipose tissue.
