What is Progesterone?

Progesterone is a steroid hormone that plays a central role in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and the production of other hormones. It is sometimes called the "pregnancy hormone" because of its essential role in preparing the uterus for implantation and maintaining early pregnancy.

In women, progesterone levels rise after ovulation during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. If pregnancy occurs, levels continue to climb to support the developing embryo. If pregnancy does not occur, progesterone drops and menstruation begins.

Men also produce progesterone in smaller amounts, where it supports testosterone production and sperm development. Progesterone serves as a precursor for the synthesis of other important hormones, including cortisol, aldosterone, estradiol, and testosterone.

Where Does Progesterone Come From?

In women, progesterone is produced mainly by the corpus luteum in the ovary after ovulation, and by the placenta during pregnancy. In men, it is produced by the testes. The adrenal glands also produce small amounts in both sexes.
