What is Luteinizing Hormone (LH)?

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the pituitary gland in your brain. It plays a central role in regulating your reproductive system.

In women, LH helps control the menstrual cycle and triggers ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). A surge in LH mid-cycle signals that ovulation is about to occur. In men, LH stimulates the Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone.

LH works together with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Both hormones are released in pulses throughout the day and are essential for normal reproductive function.

Where Does Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Come From?

LH is produced by gonadotroph cells in the anterior pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain. Its release is controlled by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus and regulated by feedback from sex hormones.
