What is Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)?
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the pituitary gland in your brain. It plays a critical role in sexual development during puberty and in reproductive function throughout adulthood.
In women, FSH stimulates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles (which contain eggs) and triggers estrogen production. In men, FSH works with the Sertoli cells in the testes to support sperm production.
FSH works closely with luteinizing hormone (LH), another pituitary hormone. Together, they form part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, a complex feedback system that regulates reproductive function.
Where Does Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Come From?
FSH is produced and secreted by gonadotropic cells in the anterior pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain. Its release is controlled by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus and is regulated through feedback from sex hormones (estrogen, testosterone) and inhibin produced by the gonads.
