What is Lipase?

Lipase is a digestive enzyme that helps your body break down fats. It works by splitting triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol, which can then be absorbed and used for energy.

It is normal to have small amounts of lipase in your blood. However, when the pancreas is inflamed or damaged, larger amounts of lipase are released into the bloodstream.

A lipase blood test measures how much lipase is in your blood. Levels more than three times the upper limit of normal are strongly suggestive of acute pancreatitis, making lipase a key marker for diagnosing pancreatic conditions.

Where Does Lipase Come From?

The pancreas produces most of the body's lipase, with smaller amounts made in the salivary glands, stomach, liver, and other tissues. During digestion, pancreatic lipase flows from the pancreas into the small intestine to help digest fats.
