What is Aldolase?
Aldolase is an enzyme that helps break down sugars to produce energy. It plays a key role in glycolysis, the process your cells use to convert glucose into usable fuel.
There are three forms (isoenzymes): aldolase A, found mainly in muscle and red blood cells; aldolase B, found in the liver, kidneys, and small intestine; and aldolase C, found in the brain.
When cells are damaged, aldolase is released into the bloodstream. A blood test measuring aldolase levels is used primarily to detect muscle injury or disease, though it can also reflect liver damage.
Where Does Aldolase Come From?
Aldolase is found throughout the body, with the highest concentrations in skeletal muscle, the liver, and the brain. Red blood cells also contain significant amounts of aldolase A.
