What is Immunoglobulin M?

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is a type of antibody that serves as your immune system's first responder when fighting infections. It's the first antibody your body produces when viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens enter your system.

IgM is the largest antibody in the body, existing as five antibody molecules joined together (a pentamer). This large structure makes it highly effective at clumping pathogens together for elimination. IgM makes up approximately 5-10% of total serum immunoglobulins.

In addition to "immune" IgM antibodies produced in response to infections, your body also maintains "natural" IgM antibodies that circulate without prior antigen exposure. These natural antibodies help remove damaged cells and provide baseline protection.

Where Does Immunoglobulin M Come From?

IgM is produced by B lymphocytes and plasma cells, primarily in the bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes. It is predominantly found in circulating blood rather than in tissues or secretions.
