What is HDL-P, Large?
Large HDL-P measures the concentration of large-sized high-density lipoprotein particles in your blood. These particles range from approximately 9.4 to 14.0 nanometers in diameter.
HDL particles vary in size and composition. Large HDL particles are lipid-rich and buoyant, carrying more cholesterol per particle than their smaller counterparts. They represent the mature, fully-loaded form of HDL that has accumulated cholesterol from peripheral tissues.
Large HDL particles are considered the most cardioprotective HDL subtype. Decreased levels of large HDL are associated with a 1.8-fold increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
Where Does HDL-P, Large Come From?
Large HDL particles form when smaller, nascent HDL particles mature by accumulating cholesterol from peripheral tissues. The liver and intestines synthesize apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), the primary protein component of HDL, which then circulates and picks up cholesterol to form progressively larger particles.
