What is HDL-P, Total?
HDL-P (HDL Particle Number) measures the total count of high-density lipoprotein particles circulating in your blood. Unlike standard HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), which measures the amount of cholesterol carried by HDL particles, HDL-P counts the actual number of particles doing the carrying.
HDL particles act as transport vehicles, collecting excess cholesterol from tissues and artery walls and returning it to the liver for elimination. This process, called reverse cholesterol transport, is a key mechanism by which HDL protects against cardiovascular disease.
Research shows that HDL particle concentration may predict cardiovascular risk more accurately than HDL cholesterol alone, because two people with the same HDL-C level can have very different numbers of HDL particles.
Where Does HDL-P, Total Come From?
HDL particles are assembled primarily in the liver and small intestine, where apolipoprotein A1 (the main protein component of HDL) is produced and combines with lipids to form nascent HDL particles.
