What is F2-Isoprostane?
F2-isoprostane is a molecule produced when free radicals damage arachidonic acid, a fatty acid found in cell membranes throughout the body. It is widely considered the gold-standard biomarker for measuring oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the body.
Unlike many other oxidative stress markers, F2-isoprostanes are chemically stable, making them particularly reliable for clinical measurement. They are formed nonenzymatically, meaning their levels reflect genuine oxidative damage rather than normal enzymatic processes.
F2-isoprostanes can be measured in blood (plasma) or urine. The urine test is often reported as an F2-isoprostane/creatinine ratio to account for differences in urine concentration.
Where Does F2-Isoprostane Come From?
F2-isoprostanes are formed in cell membranes throughout the body when free radicals attack arachidonic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid present in virtually all tissues. They are initially formed within membrane phospholipids and then released into the circulation.
