What is VLDL Size?
VLDL size measures the average diameter of very-low-density lipoprotein particles in your blood. These particles are produced by the liver and serve as the main carriers of triglycerides through the bloodstream.
Larger VLDL particles carry more triglycerides per particle, while smaller ones indicate leaner cargo and more efficient clearance from the blood. The measurement is reported in nanometers (nm) and is typically obtained through NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy as part of an advanced lipid panel.
VLDL particles are broadly grouped into two subtypes: large VLDL (VLDL1, approximately 50–80 nm) and small VLDL (VLDL2, approximately 30–50 nm). The reported size reflects the weighted average of all VLDL particles in your sample.
Where Does VLDL Size Come From?
VLDL particles are assembled and secreted by the liver. Their size is primarily determined by how much triglyceride the liver loads into each particle before releasing it into the bloodstream.
