Urine creatinine is a waste product found in your urine that comes from the normal breakdown of muscle tissue. Your body produces creatinine at a relatively constant rate based on your muscle mass, making it a useful marker for assessing kidney function and urine concentration.

Because creatinine production is stable day to day, measuring how much appears in urine helps doctors determine whether your kidneys are filtering waste properly. It is also commonly used to "normalize" other urine tests, correcting for how concentrated or diluted a urine sample may be.

Creatinine is produced in skeletal muscle as a byproduct of creatine metabolism, which is used for energy during muscle contraction. The kidneys filter creatinine from the blood and excrete it into the urine.
