What is Thyroglobulin Antibody (TgAb)?
Thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) is an antibody that targets thyroglobulin, a protein produced exclusively by the thyroid gland. Thyroglobulin serves as the building block for thyroid hormones T3 and T4.
When the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid, it produces antibodies against thyroglobulin. Approximately 10% of the general population has detectable TgAb levels, while about 20-25% of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer test positive for these antibodies.
TgAb testing is used in two main clinical settings: evaluating autoimmune thyroid disease and monitoring patients treated for differentiated thyroid cancer.
Where Does Thyroglobulin Antibody (TgAb) Come From?
TgAb is produced by B lymphocytes (immune cells) in response to thyroglobulin. In autoimmune thyroid disease, the immune system mistakenly creates these antibodies that target the thyroid's own proteins.
