What is Lyme Disease Antibody (IgG/IgM)?
The Lyme disease antibody test detects IgG and IgM antibodies produced by your immune system in response to Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. It does not detect the bacterium itself.
IgM antibodies appear first, typically within 1-4 weeks of infection, and indicate a recent or early infection. IgG antibodies develop later, usually 4-6 weeks after infection, and can persist for months to years even after successful treatment.
This is a screening test. Positive or equivocal results typically require confirmatory testing with a Western blot or a second enzyme immunoassay.
Where Does Lyme Disease Antibody (IgG/IgM) Come From?
Lyme antibodies are produced by B lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) as part of the immune system's response to Borrelia burgdorferi infection following a tick bite.
