What is Immunoglobulin E?

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a type of antibody produced by plasma cells as part of your immune system. It is one of five classes of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD, and IgE).

IgE is present in circulation at very low concentrations, representing less than 0.001% of total serum immunoglobulins. This makes it roughly 300-fold lower than IgG, the most abundant antibody.

Most IgE molecules are bound to the surface of mast cells and basophils through high-affinity receptors, which explains why so little circulates freely in the blood.

Where Does Immunoglobulin E Come From?

IgE is produced by plasma cells (activated B lymphocytes) in lymph nodes, the spleen, and mucous membranes of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Production is stimulated by cytokines IL-4 and IL-13 released by T helper cells during immune responses.
