What is F2-Isoprostane/Creatinine Ratio?

The F2-isoprostane/creatinine ratio is a urine test that measures oxidative stress in your body. F2-isoprostanes are compounds formed when free radicals damage fats (lipids) in your cell membranes. Dividing by creatinine corrects for differences in urine concentration, so results are comparable regardless of hydration status.

Oxidative stress occurs when the production of free radicals exceeds your body's antioxidant defenses. This marker is widely considered the most reliable way to measure that imbalance.

A higher ratio indicates greater lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage throughout the body. A value below 0.86 ng/mg creatinine is generally considered low risk.

Where Does F2-Isoprostane/Creatinine Ratio Come From?

F2-isoprostanes are formed throughout the body when free radicals attack arachidonic acid, a polyunsaturated fat found in cell membranes of all tissues. They are produced in situ on cell membrane phospholipids, then released into the bloodstream and excreted in urine.
