What is Epinephrine, Urine?
Urinary epinephrine measures the amount of epinephrine (also called adrenaline) excreted in your urine over a 24-hour period. Epinephrine is a catecholamine hormone produced by your adrenal glands that plays a central role in your body's fight-or-flight response.
Only a small fraction of circulating epinephrine is excreted unchanged in urine. The test is primarily used to help diagnose rare catecholamine-secreting tumors such as pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, and neuroblastoma.
Normal 24-hour urinary epinephrine levels are typically 0.5 to 20 mcg/24 hours, though reference ranges vary slightly between laboratories.
Where Does Epinephrine, Urine Come From?
Epinephrine is produced almost exclusively by the adrenal medulla, the inner portion of the adrenal glands located on top of each kidney. Small amounts may also be released from certain nerve endings.
