What is eGFR?
Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a calculated measure of how well your kidneys filter waste from your blood. It estimates the volume of blood your kidneys clean each minute, expressed in mL/min/1.73m2.
Your kidneys contain tiny blood vessel clusters called glomeruli that filter toxins and excess fluid from your blood. The eGFR is calculated from a blood test measuring creatinine (or cystatin C), along with your age and sex.
A normal eGFR is typically 90 or higher in healthy adults, though it naturally declines with age. An eGFR below 60 for three months or more may indicate chronic kidney disease.
Where Does eGFR Come From?
eGFR is calculated from serum creatinine (a waste product from muscle metabolism) or cystatin C (a protein produced by all cells), combined with age and sex. The kidneys' glomeruli filter these substances from the blood at a rate that reflects overall kidney function.
