What is Creatinine?

Creatinine is a waste product formed when creatine, a compound that helps supply energy to muscles, is broken down during normal muscle activity.

The kidneys filter creatinine from the blood and excrete it in urine. Because creatinine is produced at a relatively constant rate and is almost entirely removed by the kidneys, its blood level serves as an important marker of how well the kidneys are functioning.

Creatinine is often used to calculate the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which provides a more accurate assessment of kidney function by accounting for age, sex, and body size.

Where Does Creatinine Come From?

Creatinine is produced continuously by skeletal muscle as a byproduct of creatine metabolism. A small amount also comes from dietary meat intake, as meat contains creatine.
