What is Body Temperature?

Body temperature is a vital sign that reflects the balance between heat your body produces and heat it loses to the environment. It is one of the most basic and widely used indicators of health.

The traditional "normal" of 37.0°C (98.6°F) was established in the 1860s. Modern research based on large systematic reviews suggests the average oral temperature is closer to 36.6°C (97.9°F), with a normal oral range of approximately 36.1–37.2°C (97.0–99.0°F).

Temperature naturally fluctuates throughout the day, reaching its lowest point around 4:00 AM and peaking in the late afternoon around 6:00 PM.

Where Does Body Temperature Come From?

Body heat is generated by cellular metabolism throughout the body, with major contributions from the liver, muscles, and brain. The hypothalamus in the brain acts as the body's thermostat, coordinating heat production (through shivering and metabolic activity) and heat loss (through sweating and blood vessel dilation) to maintain a stable core temperature.
