What is Blood Pressure, Diastolic?

Diastolic blood pressure is the bottom number in a blood pressure reading. It measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart is at rest between beats, as it fills with blood for the next contraction.

Blood pressure is recorded as systolic over diastolic (for example, 120/80 mmHg). While systolic pressure reflects the force when the heart pumps, diastolic pressure indicates baseline arterial pressure and is especially important for coronary artery perfusion.

Normal diastolic pressure is generally below 80 mmHg. Readings of 80-89 mmHg indicate Stage 1 hypertension, while 90 mmHg or higher indicates Stage 2 hypertension. A diastolic reading below 60 mmHg may be considered low.

Where Does Blood Pressure, Diastolic Come From?

Diastolic blood pressure is determined by the resistance in peripheral blood vessels (small arterioles) and the elasticity of arterial walls. It is measured in the brachial artery of the upper arm using a blood pressure cuff.
